Stump removal and stump grinding services is a process that very few people think about in Utah. This is due to the high cost associated with removing stump and root systems being about 1/3 the price of a tree removal. After a tree is removed, the roots will still be in ground and most often with a big stump in the way. This can take a few years up to 2 decades to fully decompose and rot out. Most home owners do not understand the stump and the large system of roots underneath ground. Approximately 85% of the trees roots are in the first foot of the soil. The drip lin eends about 10-20% further out from where the limbs stop on a tree which is also where all roots stop. To remove all the roots on a mature tree is often unpractical and may behoove homeowners to just to grind the stump and let roots rot out.

Labor – Requires handyman jacks, pick axes, chains, and a truck if accessible to stump.
Stump Grinding – We use a 40 HP 2022 Carlton Hydraulic Stump Grinder. It uses a grinding wheel that goes back and forth half inch at a time until the depth is about 8″ below surface. Thus, allowing enough room to put sod on top.
Excavator – With many larger projects we utilize our excavator to dig out the whole root ball. To do Stump removal with excavator is usually required when pouring a concrete pad. You should always excavate the stumps if you are going to pour concrete.
Stump Removal Cost and Process
Stump removal and grinding is a straightforward process that just requires the right equipment. We price our stump based on the diameter of the tree at it’s widest point, which is located at the ground level of the tree.
If we leave the stump debris with no cleanup, then we price at $7/inch.
If we haul off wood chips and debris, then we price at $9/inch.
Other factors in bid that could increase price are as follows: rock/concrete/metal, nearby structures, and utility lines
